The author's first book, published when he was 22 years old. Some of the poems had earlier been published in"Kiwi","Phoenix", and"Art in New Zealand". The Auckland Students'Association Press was run by Bob Lowry and Ronald Holloway. Lowry's operation of the press and production of the"Phoenix"journal (which had 4 issues in total in its short life), was"proscribed"by the university authorities, after which Lowry moved south to Christchurch."Valley of Decision"was published as"Phoenix Miscellany: 1". In a note to a collection of his poetry published in 1974, Curnow wrote of this title:"In'Valley of Decision', and after it, some crisis or change from faith to scepticism may be read, however perplexed and precarious the faith was, and the scepticism no less so."[References: Robinson and Wattie,"The Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature"(1998)].; 8vo
